Know your amendments
Amendments are tools, not contestants in a cage match. Compost builds bulk organic matter, castings concentrate root-zone biology, mycorrhizae inoculate compatible roots, and mulch protects the surface.
| Material | Main job | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Compost | Bulk organic matter | Soil surface or upper layer |
| Castings | Concentrated root-zone amendment | Mixes, planting zone, top-dress |
| Mycorrhizae | Specific fungal root partnership | Direct contact with compatible roots |
| Mulch | Surface protection | On top, away from stems |
Open the three comparison guides in the library for application rates, limits, and the occasional amendment pun. Spoiler: the winner is usually “use the right tool for the job.”
