About Living Root Garden
Grow from the roots up.
Living Root Garden started with a simple obsession:
How do we grow better plants by building better soil?
That question eventually led us underground.
Specifically, to worms.
What started as a backyard experiment turned into a much larger obsession with soil biology, gardening, composting, plant nutrition, and the ridiculous amount of life happening underneath our feet.
We’re not a giant agricultural company.
We’re a small Florida business building something from the ground up—literally.
We raise worms, produce our own castings, study what we’re learning, and share that information with other gardeners.
We don’t want Living Root Garden to be just another place to buy a bag of soil amendment.
We want it to be a place where gardeners can learn why things work.
Because once you understand what’s happening in your soil, you can make better decisions in every garden you grow.
That’s the real goal.
Better soil.
Better roots.
Better gardens.
One worm bin at a time.
🌳 Why Living Root Garden Exists
Living Root Garden started with a simple question: What happens when we stop treating soil like dirt — and start treating it like the living ecosystem it actually is?
Everything we do grows out of that question. But the real story — the human one, with the family and the worms and the questionable decisions — is a little longer. Pull up a chair.
👨‍👩‍👧 Who started it
We’re a family in Keystone Heights, Florida. Not a corporation, not a startup with a pitch deck and a foosball table — just people who got well and truly obsessed with what’s happening under our feet.
It started the way the best obsessions start: in the backyard, with more curiosity than sense. A question about soil turned into reading about soil, which turned into reading about microbes, which turned into standing in the yard at an unreasonable hour thinking about earthworms. You know how it goes. (You don’t? Give it time.)
Somewhere between the research and the rabbit holes, a hobby started looking suspiciously like a calling — and a calling started looking like a business. So we decided to build the thing we wished existed: a soil company that’s really an education company wearing a soil company’s clothes.
🪱 Why worms
Because worms are the most underappreciated workforce on the planet, and it’s not close. A worm takes your scraps and turns them into black gold — no chemicals, no factories, no quarterly earnings calls. Just a humble tube with a work ethic.
We raise African nightcrawlers — they’re as good on a fishing hook as they are in a compost bin. But the real reason is simpler: they’re built for Florida heat, they work tirelessly, and they turn kitchen scraps into black gold faster than anything else we looked at. Ten seconds of research and they were the obvious choice.
Three backyard bins. Thousands of worms. One very ambitious family. That’s where our castings come from — made by us, from our own worms, in small batches. (More on why “small batch” matters over on our Why Grow with Living Root page.)
If you’re new to the stuff, here’s the short version: worm castings are one of nature’s most powerful soil amendments — the nutrient-dense end product of a composting worm’s digestive tract, packed with beneficial microbes, enzymes, humic substances, and plant-available minerals. They carry a broad spectrum of trace minerals and micronutrients that regulate plant metabolism, strengthen root development, and improve nutrient absorption. And unlike synthetic fertilizers that force quick growth while starving the soil, castings feed the soil itself.
But the true magic happens at the roots. Plant roots team up with microbes and fungi underground, forming a living network that trades nutrients, water, and biological signals. Castings make that network stronger — food and habitat for beneficial soil life, which means stronger roots, better soil structure, better moisture retention, and healthier plants.
🌱 Why soil
Here’s the part that changed how we see everything: soil isn’t dirt. Dirt is what you sweep off the porch. Soil is a living city — bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and about a billion other residents per teaspoon, all trading nutrients in an economy more complex than Wall Street and considerably more honest.
Modern conventional farming has spent decades treating that city like an empty lot — tilling it, dosing it with synthetic fertilizer, and wondering why the food it grows keeps getting less nutritious. The science is pretty clear on this one: tired soil grows tired food.
Worm castings don’t fix that with magic. They fix it with biology — feeding the microbial life that feeds your plants, the way nature intended before we got clever. We got into this business because somebody ought to be loudly, joyfully on soil’s side. Might as well be the family with the worm bins.
🌴 Why Florida
Because Florida soil is a special kind of terrible, and we say that with love.
Our native ground is mostly sugar sand — ancient seabed that drains like it’s late for something. Water pours in, nutrients wave goodbye on the way down, and the whole thing sits under a climate that swings from “surface of the sun” to “surprise frost,” sometimes in the same month. Growing here isn’t gardening on easy mode. The difficulty slider is maxed out and somebody hid the settings menu.
That’s exactly why we’re here.
This isn’t a franchise that Googled “Florida gardening tips.” We didn’t move here for the brand — we’re Florida born and raised, with sand in our shoes and this climate in our bones. We’ve lived the scorch, the sugar sand, and the surprise frost. If you can build living, thriving soil through a North Florida summer, you can build it anywhere.
Florida doesn’t need another company selling generic advice written for Ohio. It needs people who garden in the actual heat, in the actual sand — people who’ve watched a thunderstorm dump three inches at 4pm and found the soil bone-dry by 6.
That’s us, every single day.
🏗️ Why we’re building the business
Honestly? Because we went looking for the thing we wanted to buy — honest castings, from a company that would show its work, run by people who actually answer questions — and we couldn’t find it. So we’re building it.
That means every batch gets a lot number you can look up. It means we teach first and sell second — guides, workshops, and answers with actual science in them. It means we’d rather talk you out of buying something you don’t need than talk you into something you do. (Terrible sales strategy. Great way to sleep at night.)
Every batch is made with care and intention — high-quality organic inputs, carefully managed vermiculture, and a clean, biologically active finished product. Consistency, nutrient density, microbial life: that’s the bar, because our castings go into soil we want to stay alive.
🔄 Where we’re taking it
The worm farm is just the beginning. The dream is a closed loop, and it looks like this:
Our worms make castings. The castings feed the soil at our nursery and specialty growing operation. The nursery grows the food. The food goes to Living Root Cafe — our future farm-to-table restaurant. The cafe’s kitchen scraps go back to the worms. Round and round, nothing wasted, everybody fed.
We’re building it one piece at a time, starting with the worms — because everything good starts underground. If you want to watch a family try to build a better food system from a backyard in Florida, you’re in the right place. Come grow with us.
We’re proud to stand behind gardeners who grow naturally — vegetables in a backyard bed, houseplants on a windowsill, fruit trees, or full garden beds. Healthy soil is the foundation of every successful garden: when soil is alive, plants grow stronger, roots grow deeper, and nutrients cycle the way nature intended.
At Living Root Garden, we’re not just selling soil amendments — we’re helping gardeners, farmers, and plant lovers grow from the roots up.
