Worm Bin Troubleshooter: What’s Wrong With Your Bin?

Your worms are talking — here’s how to listen

A worm bin is a tiny ecosystem, and like any ecosystem it complains when something’s off. Worms climbing the walls, a smell that clears the room, fruit flies staging an airshow — every symptom points somewhere. This tool does the matching: check off what you’re seeing, smelling, or finding, and it ranks the most likely causes with how to confirm and what to do.

One rule that solves half of all worm bin problems: the worms are almost always right. If they’re trying to leave, something in the bin is wrong — too wet, too hot, too acidic, not enough air. Don’t trap them in; fix the conditions and they’ll stay.

How to use this tool

  • Check every symptom that applies — more checks, better ranking.
  • Read the results top-down. Each card shows the match count, how to confirm, what to do, and prevention.
  • Cards tagged ⚠ Act fast mean worms are dying or about to flee — mass escape, stink, overheating, freezing, protein poisoning, acidity, sogginess. Don’t sit on those.

The usual suspects (spoiler)

Most bin disasters trace back to four things: too much food (the #1 beginner mistake — worms eat their bedding too, so an empty-looking bin isn’t a starving bin), too wet (no drainage, watery scraps), no air (compacted bedding goes anaerobic and stinks), and temperature (a bin in the Florida sun cooks; a bin in a northern garage freezes). Get those four right and the bin mostly runs itself.

A note on the other critters

Not everything in your bin is a problem. White and brown mites, potworms, and springtails are just the cleanup crew’s cleanup crew — they show up when conditions favor them and rarely hurt worms. Red mites are the exception (they’re parasitic). The tool tells you which is which, because panicking over harmless mites is a rite of passage we’d like to shorten.
