How to grow

Direct sow in fall in Florida for spring blooms — it loves cool-season growing and checks out when summer heat arrives. Rake seeds into the soil surface; they need light to germinate. It self-seeds freely, so one planting becomes a tradition whether you plan it or not.

Water & feeding

Drought-tolerant once established; water seedlings until they're up and running, then back off. Overwatering causes floppy stems.

Common problems

  • Powdery mildew in humid, crowded stands
  • Floppy stems in too-rich soil (it prefers lean conditions)
  • Fades fast once heat arrives

Harvest

Cut early and often — the more you pick, the more it blooms. Deadhead ruthlessly; each spent flower left on is a bloom that never happens.

Nerdy fact: Bachelor's button was once a cornfield weed in Europe, so common that farmers considered it a pest. Then someone put it in a bouquet and it became a garden staple — the ultimate glow-up.
