🌻 Black-Eyed Susan
How to grow
Direct sow in fall or early spring in Florida — it handles heat better than most daisies but appreciates afternoon shade in the Deep South. It's technically a short-lived perennial often grown as an annual; let it self-seed and you'll never buy it again. Deadhead for rebloom or leave heads for birds.
Water & feeding
Drought-tolerant once established; water during prolonged dry spells. Good drainage matters more than frequent water.
Common problems
- Powdery mildew in humid, crowded plantings
- Septoria leaf spot (black spots on lower leaves)
- Asters yellow (phytoplasma) — pull and destroy affected plants
Harvest
Cut stems when flowers are fully open for bouquets; deadhead to extend bloom into fall. Leave the last flush standing — goldfinches harvest the seeds all winter.
