⭐ Borage
How to grow
Direct sow in fall through spring in Florida — it hates transplanting (taproot drama), so put seeds where they'll live. It self-seeds with enthusiasm; one planting becomes a permanent volunteer colony. Tuck it near tomatoes and squash — it's a legendary companion plant.
Water & feeding
Drought-tolerant; water seedlings until established, then let Florida rain handle it. Overwatering makes it floppy.
Common problems
- Self-seeds aggressively — deadhead if you want control
- Powdery mildew in humid shade
- Floppy stems in rich, overwatered soil
Harvest
Pick young leaves for salads (cucumber flavor!) and freeze flowers in ice cubes for drinks. Deadhead to extend bloom, or don't — the volunteers are free plants.
