๐งก Calendula
How to grow
Sow in fall in Florida for winter-through-spring blooms โ it laughs at light frost and wilts at the first 90ยฐF day. Deadhead constantly or it sets seed and quits. It's a workhorse in the edible flower bed and the pollinator strip alike.
Water & feeding
Evenly moist; mulch to keep roots cool. Drought stress = fewer, smaller flowers.
Common problems
- Powdery mildew when humidity spikes
- Aphids on buds (blast with water)
- Stops blooming in heat โ it's a cool-season plant in Florida
Harvest
Pick flowers in the morning when fully open; pull the petals for salads, teas, and salves. The more you deadhead, the more it produces โ neglect is the only enemy.
