How to grow

Set out transplants after nights stay above 50°F — impatiens sulk in cold soil and never quite recover. They want rich, moist soil and reward you with nonstop color in spots too dark for almost anything else. Note: downy mildew devastated impatiens for years; buy resistant varieties (like Beacon or Imara) or grow New Guinea impatiens instead.

Water & feeding

Water regularly — they wilt dramatically when dry but usually perk right back up; think of it as botanical theater.

Common problems

  • Downy mildew — use resistant varieties; destroy (don't compost) infected plants.
  • Leggy in too much sun or too little water.
  • Slugs in damp shade.

Harvest

No deadheading needed — they self-clean; pinch back leggy stems midseason for a fresh flush.

Nerdy fact: The name Impatiens means 'impatient' — the ripe seed pods explode at a touch, flinging seeds several feet. It's botanical popcorn with an attitude.
