How to grow

Plant after all frost danger in the hottest, sunniest spot you've got — lantana thrives on neglect and blooms harder the hotter it gets. It's a Florida landscape workhorse, evergreen in zone 10+ and root-hardy in zone 9 with mulch. Deadheading isn't required but keeps it tidy; cut back hard in late winter to refresh. Note: many varieties are invasive in Florida — choose sterile cultivars.

Water & feeding

Water to establish; mature plants are extremely drought-tolerant — one of the toughest flowering shrubs there is.

Common problems

  • Lace bugs stippling leaves — blast with water.
  • Whiteflies in crowded plantings.
  • Berries are toxic to pets and livestock — site thoughtfully.

Harvest

Cut flower clusters for small bright bouquets; deadhead or shear lightly to encourage rebloom waves.

Nerdy fact: Lantana flower clusters change color as they age — yellow buds open, then turn orange, then red — guiding pollinators to the fresh, nectar-rich flowers. It's a living 'now serving' sign.
