How to grow

Set out transplants after the last frost in rich, well-drained soil. Pentas are the rare flower that blooms harder the hotter it gets — peak Florida summer is their main character moment. Pinch young plants once to encourage branching.

Water & feeding

Keep evenly moist the first month, then water deeply when the top inch dries; they sulk in drought but drown in swamp.

Common problems

  • Aphids cluster on new growth — blast with water or invite ladybugs
  • Spider mites in hot, dusty spots; rinse foliage regularly
  • Root rot in waterlogged soil — raised beds or mounds fix it

Harvest

Deadhead spent clusters to keep blooms coming; cut stems for small bouquets — they last about a week in water.

Nerdy fact: Pentas flowers are built for butterflies: long tubular corollas match a butterfly's proboscis exactly, and the star-shaped face is a landing pad with a nectar straw in the middle.
