How to grow

Transplant after nights are reliably warm — vinca planted into cold soil just sits there. It's the undisputed champion of Florida summer annuals, blooming through heat that murders everything else. Don't over-amend; it prefers lean soil.

Water & feeding

Water at the base, never overhead — wet foliage invites the blight that kills vinca. Once established it's quite drought-tough.

Common problems

  • Phytophthora aerial blight in wet weather — water at soil level, mulch
  • Loves heat but hates cold soil; planting too early stunts it
  • Few insect pests — one of its superpowers

Harvest

Self-cleaning; no deadheading. Cut stems for small bouquets — they hold a few days.

Nerdy fact: Vinca gave medicine two famous chemotherapy drugs — vincristine and vinblastine were first isolated from its leaves, so this tough little flower literally saves lives.
