How to grow

Plant dormant bare-root vines in late winter on the sturdiest trellis you can build — a mature vine is shockingly heavy. Prune hard every winter; grapes fruit on new growth from one-year-old wood, so annual pruning isn't optional, it's the whole game. Florida gardeners: Pierce's disease is fatal to vinifera here — grow muscadines.

Water & feeding

Deep and infrequent; established vines are drought-tough. Ease off as fruit ripens for better flavor.

Common problems

  • Pierce's disease in the Southeast — spread by sharpshooters, no cure, choose muscadines instead
  • Powdery and downy mildew — airflow and sun are your fungicides
  • Birds and Japanese beetles, the eternal duo

Harvest

Taste, don't eyeball — color lies, sugar doesn't. Pick whole clusters when sweet; grapes don't ripen off the vine.

Nerdy fact: European wine grapes were nearly wiped out in the 1800s by phylloxera, a tiny root louse — the entire industry was saved by grafting vinifera onto resistant American rootstock. Every fine wine you've had is a graft.
