How to grow

Plant like an apple tree — because it basically is one, just with smaller fruit and bigger ornamental ambitions. Choose disease-resistant varieties (scab and fire blight resistance matter enormously). Persistent-fruited types feed birds all winter, which is either charming or messy depending on your patio situation. Low-chill types exist for warm zones.

Water & feeding

Regular water the first two years; established trees handle moderate drought. Consistent moisture during fruit development reduces drop.

Common problems

  • Apple scab (the classic crabapple curse — choose resistant varieties)
  • Fire blight in warm, wet springs
  • Cedar-apple rust where junipers grow nearby
  • Fruit mess on patios with non-persistent varieties

Harvest

Fruit is technically edible but mouth-puckeringly tart — it's for jelly, wildlife, and winter color, not fresh eating. Leave persistent varieties on the tree for birds. Prune in late winter to shape and remove crossing branches.

Nerdy fact: Crabapples and domestic apples are the same genus and cross freely — your 'ornamental' tree is one bee visit away from contributing genes to an orchard. Many beloved apple varieties have crabapple ancestry in their family tree.
