How to grow

Plant in rich, acidic, moisture-retentive soil — jaboticaba loves the same conditions as blueberries and sulks in alkaline sand. It's famously slow, so buy the biggest tree you can afford and settle in. It handles Florida's climate happily from Central Florida south, tolerating brief light frosts once established.

Water & feeding

Loves consistent moisture; don't let it dry out, especially while young.

Common problems

  • Glacial growth rate
  • Iron chlorosis in alkaline soil
  • Scale insects

Harvest

Fruit ripens right on the trunk and limbs — pick when deep purple-black and glossy. Ferments fast, so eat or process quickly.

Nerdy fact: This is cauliflory — flowering directly from the trunk — an adaptation so pollinators (and now you) don't have to climb into the canopy. The tree brings the fruit to you. Service!
