Barbados Cherry: Growing GuideChris Cochran2026-10-18T12:34:15+00:00
🍒 Barbados Cherry
Malpighia emarginata
The cherry that's not a cherry, famous for vitamin C and zero chill — literally, it hates frost.
Days to harvest
1–2 years from a nursery plant; can fruit nearly year-round in frost-free zones
How to grow
Plant after all frost danger in well-drained soil — this tropical shrub sulks in soggy ground. Mulch well and give it room; it wants to be a small tree when it grows up. In Central Florida, plant on the warmest, most sheltered side of the yard.
Water & feeding
Water regularly the first year; established plants handle short dry spells like champs.
Common problems
- Frost damage — dies back hard below freezing, so North Florida gardeners should container-grow and wheel it inside
- Root rot in poorly drained soil
- Scale and mealybugs on stressed plants
Harvest
Pick when fully deep red and slightly soft. The fruit is thin-skinned and perishable — eat, freeze, or juice within a day or two of picking.
Nerdy fact: It's not a true cherry at all — it belongs to the Malpighiaceae family, and the genus Malpighia is named for Marcello Malpighi, the 17th-century microscopist who basically invented plant anatomy.
