🌾 Caragana
How to grow
Plant in spring in just about any soil — caragana is famously unfussy and fixes its own nitrogen like the legume it is. It's the plant you install and then ignore for thirty years. Use it for windbreaks, hedges, and erosion control in tough northern sites. Not a Florida plant — it needs real winter cold and sulks in heat.
Water & feeding
Water to establish, then basically forget it. Mature caragana is extremely drought tolerant — it evolved for the Siberian steppe, where 'irrigation' is a rumor.
Common problems
- Blister beetles occasionally defoliating it (it usually recovers)
- Not heat tolerant — strictly a northern plant
- Can sucker and spread where happy
- Few serious issues — it's nearly indestructible in its zone
Harvest
Small pea-like pods are technically edible when young (it's a legume), though it's grown for toughness, not cuisine. Prune after spring flowering if shaping is needed.
