How to grow

Sow after nights stay above 60°F — celosia hates cold soil and will stunt if planted too early. In Florida, spring planting gives blooms through fall. It wants well-drained soil; wet feet cause stem rot. The plume types reseed; the crested (cockscomb) types are the weird showstoppers.

Water & feeding

Moderate — let the top inch dry between waterings. Overwatering is the fastest way to kill it.

Common problems

  • Stem rot in cold, wet soil
  • Spider mites in hot, dry weather
  • Stunted growth if transplanted into cold soil

Harvest

Cut plumes when fully colored for fresh bouquets, or let them dry on the plant for everlasting arrangements — they hold color for months. Deadhead to extend bloom.

Nerdy fact: The crested cockscomb form is a fasciation mutation — the flower stem flattened and multiplied into a ruffled fan. It's a botanical glitch humans decided was gorgeous.
