How to grow

Tropical highland plant — in Florida, it grows outdoors only in zone 10b–11, and even there it wants afternoon shade and wind protection. Everywhere else, grow it as a gorgeous houseplant and consider any beans a bonus. Plant in rich, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It hates both drought and waterlogging with equal passion.

Water & feeding

Consistent moisture — the soil should feel like a wrung-out sponge. Mulch to retain humidity, and mist indoor plants or run a humidifier; dry air browns the leaf edges.

Common problems

  • Cold damage below about 30°F
  • Coffee leaf miners and scale on stressed plants
  • Overwatering and root rot indoors
  • Leaf browning from dry indoor air in winter

Harvest

Cherries ripen to red (or yellow, depending on variety) — pick individually as they ripen. Processing beans into drinkable coffee involves fermenting, drying, roasting, and grinding, which is a whole hobby unto itself. Most home growers frame the harvest as a novelty; coffee snobs, as a lifestyle.

Nerdy fact: Coffee is a natural insecticide — the plant makes caffeine to paralyze and kill insects that chew its leaves. Your morning cup is literally plant chemical warfare that humans decided to drink voluntarily.
