How to grow

Plant in spring in well-drained soil — in Florida, give afternoon shade and excellent drainage; it hates wet feet in summer. It's drought-tolerant once established and dislikes being fussed over. Leave seed heads standing through winter for birds and self-seeding.

Water & feeding

Water to establish, then back off — it's a prairie plant that prefers lean, dry conditions. Overwatering shortens its life.

Common problems

  • Aster yellows (phytoplasma) — distorted green flowers; pull and destroy
  • Powdery mildew in humid shade
  • Crown rot in soggy soil

Harvest

Cut flowers just as petals unfurl for bouquets. Deadhead for rebloom, or leave heads for goldfinches — they'll strip every seed by January.

Nerdy fact: Echinacea's immune-boosting reputation comes from alkamides that tingle your tongue — that buzzing sensation is literally the active compounds announcing themselves. Your mouth is a chemistry lab.
