2–3 years to full production
Spacing
4–5 ft apart
Soil pH
6.0–7.0

How to grow

Plant dormant bare-root stock in early spring, mulch to keep roots cool, and give it real winter — currants need serious chill hours to fruit. Florida gardeners: this is your sign to grow blueberries and muscadines instead and admire currants from afar.

Water & feeding

Consistent moisture; stressed currants drop fruit like they're making a point.

Common problems

  • Needs hundreds of chill hours — no chill, no fruit
  • White pine blister rust — currants host it, and planting is restricted near white pines in some states
  • Powdery mildew in humid air

Harvest

Pick whole clusters (strigs) when fully colored and a taste test says sweet-tart, not just tart.

Nerdy fact: Currants were effectively banned across much of the US for decades because the whole Ribes clan can carry white pine blister rust — the federal ban made them a mysterious forbidden fruit, and gardeners have been obsessed ever since.
