How to grow

Plant after the last frost in any decent soil — this Florida native is famously unbothered. In North Florida it freezes to the ground and roars back from the roots each spring; in South Florida it's evergreen and shrubby year-round. Cut back leggy stems in early spring to keep it bushy.

Water & feeding

Water to establish, then ignore it — firebush laughs at drought once its roots are in.

Common problems

  • Freezes back north of zone 9 (resprouts reliably)
  • Occasional scale or mealybugs
  • Leaf spot in soggy spots

Harvest

Ornamental — deadhead spent blooms to stretch the show, or leave the red berries for the birds. Everybody wins.

Nerdy fact: Firebush is a hummingbird vending machine — its tubular red-orange flowers are shaped exactly for hummingbird beaks, and zebra longwings treat it like a favorite restaurant.
