How to grow
The most cold-hardy citrus you can grow — 'Nagami' shrugs off light freezes that flatten limes, making it the North Florida citrus of choice. Plant in full sun in well-drained soil, graft union high. It's naturally compact, so it also shines in a big pot on a sunny patio.
Water & feeding
Deep weekly soak; container trees need more frequent checks.
Common problems
- Citrus greening (HLB) — buy clean stock
- Citrus leafminer
- Scale in crowded canopies
Harvest
Eat whole when fully orange — the peel is sweet, the flesh is tart, and the contrast is the entire point.
Nerdy fact: It's backwards citrus: with every other citrus you peel and eat the inside, but the kumquat's sweet part is the rind and the tart part is the flesh. It read the manual upside down.
