How to grow

Plant grafted trees — seedlings take even longer and vary wildly — in the warmest, most sheltered microclimate you own. Mangosteen has zero frost tolerance, so in Florida this is a zone 10b–11 game, ideally near the coast or under canopy protection. Give it deep, rich, well-drained soil and mulch heavily, keeping mulch off the trunk.

Water & feeding

Keep soil consistently moist but never soggy — young trees are drama queens about both drought and wet feet. Mature trees tolerate short dry spells.

Common problems

  • Frost — even a light freeze can kill young trees; mature trees handle only the briefest dips
  • Agonizingly slow growth — grafted trees and patience are the only cure
  • Fruit splitting and translucent flesh from irregular watering

Harvest

Fruits ripen to deep purple; the rind should give slightly under thumb pressure. Twist, don't yank — and eat fresh, because the white segments bruise if you look at them wrong.

Nerdy fact: Mangosteen trees are apomictic — the seeds are genetic clones of the mother, so every seedling is essentially the same tree wearing a different pot.
