How to grow

Papayas are the instant gratification of tropical fruit โ€” sprout seeds, blink, harvest. They need warmth (damage below freezing), excellent drainage, and a sheltered spot; in marginal zones, grow in a big pot and wheel it inside for cold snaps. Plant several seedlings and keep the most vigorous hermaphrodite.

Water & feeding

Regular water, but drainage is non-negotiable โ€” wet feet rot the hollow trunk fast. Mulch, don't drown.

Common problems

  • Papaya ringspot virus โ€” mottled leaves, ruined fruit; no cure, remove infected plants
  • Root rot in poorly drained soil โ€” the number-one killer
  • Fruit flies sting ripening fruit; bag individual fruits

Harvest

Pick when the skin shows the first blush of yellow-orange; it ripens fully on the counter. Twist gently โ€” ripe papayas bruise if you breathe on them.

Nerdy fact: Papaya contains papain, an enzyme so good at breaking down protein it's used as meat tenderizer. The fruit literally digests โ€” respectfully, deliciously.
