How to grow

Sow directly where they'll grow โ€” poppies grow a taproot that throws a fit if disturbed, so no transplanting. In Florida, sow in fall for winter-spring blooms; they despise heat. Scatter seeds on the surface and press in; they need light to germinate.

Water & feeding

Keep seedbed moist until germination, then water sparingly โ€” poppies prefer life on the dry side once established.

Common problems

  • Damping off in soggy seedbeds โ€” sow in cool, airy soil
  • Aphids on buds; a hard water spray usually suffices
  • Heat ends the show early โ€” they're cool-season only in Florida

Harvest

Cut just as buds crack color for the longest vase life; let some pods mature to save seed for next fall.

Nerdy fact: Poppy seeds can sleep in soil for years waiting for the right conditions โ€” some famously germinated in London after wartime bombing disturbed long-buried ground.
