How to grow

Plant in cool climates with real winters — spruce needs cold dormancy and hates heat. In Florida: don't. It will decline within a few years no matter what you do, and no amount of worm castings fixes a missing winter. Northern gardeners: give it well-drained acidic soil and plenty of room.

Water & feeding

Consistent moisture while young; established trees are moderately drought-tolerant in cool climates.

Common problems

  • Spider mites and bagworms
  • Needle cast diseases in humid air
  • In Florida: heat, humidity, and no chill — a three-front war it cannot win

Harvest

No harvest — the payoff is the perfect Christmas-tree silhouette. Prune only dead or crossing branches; spruce doesn't resprout from old wood, so every cut is permanent.

Nerdy fact: Spruce wood is the gold standard for piano soundboards and violin tops — the same tree that can't handle Orlando makes a Stradivarius sing.
