How to grow

Strictly a south Florida tree — anything near freezing kills young trees, so central and north Florida growers need containers they can move inside. Plant in spring in rich, well-drained soil with wind protection. It's a fast grower once established, sometimes too fast.

Water & feeding

Loves water — regular deep irrigation, especially while fruiting; drought stress drops fruit.

Common problems

  • Freeze damage — the number-one killer outside zone 10
  • Fruit flies on ripe fruit
  • High oxalic acid: folks with kidney issues should skip it

Harvest

Pick when fully yellow-gold and fragrant — green starfruit is mouth-puckeringly sour. Slice crosswise for the star shape; eat skin and all.

Nerdy fact: Starfruit's five ridges are an evolutionary billboard — the shape may help the fruit catch light and attract the bats and birds that disperse its seeds.
