How to grow

Plant dormant, mulch thick to keep roots cool, and accept the thorns — long sleeves are part of the uniform. Like currants, gooseberries need real winter chill, which puts most of Florida firmly out of the running.

Water & feeding

Even moisture; drought-stressed bushes drop fruit early.

Common problems

  • Heat stress — south of Zone 8, don't bother
  • Powdery mildew in humid weather
  • Gooseberry sawfly larvae that can defoliate a bush while you blink

Harvest

Pick green and tart for cooking, or wait until they color up and sweeten for fresh eating. Either way, watch the thorns — they mean it.

Nerdy fact: Victorian England had competitive gooseberry-growing clubs with official weigh-ins and enormous prize berries — the original 'mine's bigger than yours' contest, judged with scales.
