2–4 feet apart depending on species
How to grow
Pink muhly grass is Florida's ornamental grass superstar — native, drought-tough, and explodes into pink cotton-candy plumes every fall. Plant in well-drained soil any time the ground isn't frozen (so, basically always here). Divide clumps every 3–4 years or they'll eat the bed.
Water & feeding
Water to establish; most are admirably drought-tolerant once settled. Overwatering makes them floppy — grasses respect tough love.
Common problems
- Flopping from too much water, too much fertilizer, or too much shade
- Self-seeding thugs like pampas grass — deadhead if you don't want a takeover
- Mealybugs and scale on fountain grass in stressed plantings
Harvest
Ornamental: cut back to 6 inches in late winter before spring growth — the annual haircut. Compost the thatch or use it as mulch.
Nerdy fact: Grasses use C4 photosynthesis — a turbocharged carbon-fixing system that laughs at heat. It's why your lawn survives August and your
lettuce doesn't.
