🏃 Flea Beetle

Various species
Shotgun holes in your leaves, Olympic jumps when you get close.

How to identify

Tiny (1/16 to 1/8 inch) shiny black or striped beetles that jump like fleas when disturbed — the jump is the ID. Larvae are thin white grubs feeding on roots underground.

Damage signs

Adults chew hundreds of tiny round 'shotholes' in leaves; on seedlings this can defoliate and kill the plant outright. They also spread plant diseases like early blight as they feed.

Non-chemical controls

  • Cover seedlings with floating row cover until they're large enough to outgrow the damage — the single most effective tactic.
  • Delay planting by 2 weeks past the normal date so the first big wave of emerging beetles starves before your crops arrive.
  • Set yellow sticky traps at plant height to catch jumping adults.
  • Interplant with catnip, mint, or tall companion crops that confuse and shade the beetles.
  • Dust kaolin clay on foliage — the white mineral film irritates beetles and masks the leaf from their senses.
  • Keep beds weed-free and till in fall; flea beetles overwinter in debris and leaf litter.
Nerdy fact: Flea beetles jump using a spring-loaded structure in their hind legs called the metafemoral spring — the same catapult mechanism actual fleas use. Convergent evolution built two unrelated animals the same pogo stick.
